lampard as interim

I suppose this was the smartest decision we could have made at the moment; something that has just come up today after both Enrique and Nagelsmann have held talks.

After Bruno has made it clear that interim head coach is not a position he'd particularly like, Frank Lampard looks set to rejoin the club as manager until the end of the season.

This feels like the right choice, and it means that come the summer when we will have sorted out our overflowing squad and put out other fires, a manager can come in and start completely fresh, which will mean hopefully we can begin next season in the best possible stead.

I want to stress, I don't expect instant domination and flawless results from Lampard. We may not even knock out Real Madrid in the Champions League, and that's okay. This season has been a write-off for a while now and the most important thing is that we just ride it out until the end without too many more crises.

I saw someone compare this to Hiddink taking over from Mourinho in 2015/16. We had already sunk low in the table, and we just needed someone to get us over the line, before an Antonio Conte came in and restored form the next season. Lampard is our Hiddink, Enrique/Nagelsmann is our Conte.

There is always the possibility that Lampard ends up doing surprisingly well. Perhaps we do make it to the next round of the CL. There may be a tiny chance we could win the whole thing. Does Lamps get a full contract if that happens? I would say... no. I think the options we're lining up to become the next manager in the summer far outclass Lampard. Success in that limited period may not secure him the full job at Chelsea, but it would certainly restore his managerial image and maybe even line up some possible job opportunities for him to continue to develop as a manager.

Then there's the question of backroom staff - I have no idea how that would look, former assistant Jody Morris of course now has the job at Swindon. There's talks that JT would take the role, which I wouldn't complain about, we'll have to wait and see.

Either way, I think the club have played this well, it means we play things completely 100% safe going forward. There isn't really a downside to signing Lampard on an interim basis, it doesn't matter if form doesn't change, his role will be to boost morale, organise the squad and get things ready for the summer.
